There are over 2500 people involved on the bivouac, made up from organisation, competitors, media and sponsors.

Since 1979 more than 13000 men and women have competed in the Dakar event. In 2007, 245 competitors competed on motorcycles, 185 competitors competed in cars and 85 competitors competed in trucks. People of 42 nationalities competed in this years event.

Some of the logistics involved include:
• 28 Organisation vehicles
• 10 Helicopters
• 20 Planes
• 54 Doctors
• 11 Trucks for the catering
• 77 People are involved in the catering - 55 serving and 22 in the kitchen

The Route in 2007
The route is changed every year to ensure that there is no advantage to anyone that has competed previously. This year 5 countries were crossed: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal. The distance covered totalled 7915 Km. Of which 4309 Km of the distance covered was taken up by racing stages.
